Water Birth

Immersion in warm water is one of the best comfort measures available during labor. Women say that they enjoy freedom of movement and the sensations of labor are milder. Midwives notice that healthy blood pressure is supported; and edema or swelling is reduced. You may stay stay in the water as you birth, or move to your bed or another comfortable place before delivery. The tub is large enough for birther and partner (and baby!) to be there together. People often comment that being in the tub naturally creates something of a bubble of privacy- your midwives and other support people are nearby, but you have your own space.

Many who birth in the tub deliver their babies into their own or their partner’s hands. Baby is brought to the surface right away. This makes for a very gentle transition for the baby, who moves from the watery warmth of the womb into the similar environment of the tub, and then right up to your chest.
